| Q2. | What is SmartConsole Utility provided in Web Smart Switch series? Oct 16, 2008 ~ |
| Answer:
The SmartConsole Utility is a configuration wizard that easily allows customers to discover multiple D-Link web smart switches within the same L2 network segment connected to user’s local PC. Specialized for D-Link Web Smart Switch series, it provides easy initial setting of smart switches. Using this wizard, the administrator can do the following task: - View events log and traps - Do some configurations for any D-Link Switch discovered by SmartConsole Utility - Change the device password for any D-Link Switch discovered by SmartConsole Utility - Firmware Upgrade |

| Q3. | What is the difference between Port-based 802.1x authentication and MAC-based 802.1x authentication? Sep 16, 2008 ~ |
| Answer:
In Port-based 802.1x authentication, once a port is authorized by a client, then the other users connecting to the same port (using Hub/ switch) can pass through the switch and access network resources without the need to be authenticated.
In MAC-based 802.1x authentication, all users trying to access the network will be authenticated (username and password), and the switch will check in its database whether the maximum MAC address allowed has been reached. If the maximum has been reached, the users will not be able to access the network.

| Q5. | What are the differences between D-Link Web Smart Switch and the D-Link Managed Switch? Aug 15, 2008 ~ |
| Answer:
The D-Link Web Smart Switches provide many of the same advanced features as fully managed switches, but at a price that is closer to an unmanaged switch. The Web Smart Switches are also easier to configure and operate than managed switches, making it more suitable to be deployed for SMB that have limited human resources but comes with increasing bandwidth requirements. As the smart switches can be managed, configured and monitored using the user friendly web-based interface (GUI), administrator can easily configure the device without any difficulties, thus reducing the times spent and the cost of deployment and training staff are also dramatically reduced.

| Q6. | How does NAS differ from SAN? Jul 21, 2008 ~ |
| Answer: Storage Area Network (SAN) uses an architecture where remote computer storage devices such as disk arrays, tape libraries, etc. are attached to servers in a way the operating system sees the devices as locally attached.
In contrast to SAN, Network Attached Storage (NAS) uses file-based protocols such as NFS or SMB/CIFS, and recognizes the storage as remote, where connected computers request only a portion of an abstract file rather than a disk block. |

| Q8. | What is Green Ethernet Technology? Jun 24, 2008 ~ |
| Answer:
Green Ethernet is a technology that implements special power-saving features which detect link status and cable length to adjust power usage.
Green Ethernet technology saves energy in two specific ways:
- Method 1: If there is no link on a switch port, such as when there is no computer connected to the port or the connected computer is powered off, Green Ethernet will enter into a 'sleep mode' to reduce power used for that port.
- Method 2: D-Link Green Ethernet detects the length of the Ethernet cable connected to the switch and adjusts power usage accordingly without affecting performance. In this way, if a port is connected with a cable less than 20 meters, it will only use as much power as it needs instead of full power, which is only needed for 100 meter cables.

| Q11. | What is Microsoft Network Access Protection (NAP)? May 16, 2008 ~ |
| Answer: Network Access Protection (NAP) is a policy enforcement platform that provides better protection to private network by enforcing compliance with computer health requirements. For example, setting a policy allowing firewall to be installed and enabled only if latest operating system updates are installed.
Using NAP, administrator can create customized health requirement policies to validate computer health before allowing network access or communication, configure automatic update of computer system software to ensure ongoing compliance, and/or optionally confine non-compliant computers to a restricted network until they become compliant.
NAP technology is currently being researched for beta testing for inclusion into Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
D-Link Switches that support NAP feature are:
- DGS-3600 Series
- DGS-3400 Series
- DES-3800 Series
- DES-3500 Series
